For many years, dental implants have been a leading method of treating the loss of part or all of the human dentition. Whatever the cause of the loss of a tooth or most of them (extensive caries, fracture, periodontitis), the placement of implants is advantageous as a method of restoration compared to the older methods (bridges, partial or complete dentures) since it restores the root of the lost tooth and thus both the feeling in chewing and the appearance resemble those of a natural tooth. The use of implants in dentistry for more than 40 years and the monitoring of their progress in the oral cavity for all this time, makes them the most biocompatible solution, fully accepted by the oral tissues and now the method of choice in the treatment of tooth loss. However, the rapid advances in technology and ongoing scientific research in this field put us in the happy position of now being able to talk about the use of implants as a perfectly simple matter. Why are dental implants now a simple matter?
1) Implant placement in just 15 minutes
Placement time-15 minutes for each implant. The procedure is so completely predictable that it takes only 15 minutes to place an implant. In fact, when the implants to be placed are more than one and on the same side of the mouth, the process is even shorter. Thus, for the restoration of an entire jaw, the usual estimated time is one hour (6 implants).
2) Minimal patient inconvenience
Minimal patient discomfort both during and after surgery. During the implant placement procedure, the patient feels absolutely nothing during the implant placement process. Local anesthesia has been administered beforehand and thus there is no sensation in the area. In fact, before the administration of anaesthesia, we place anaesthetic gel on the gums and so the patient does not even feel the hint of the anaesthetic needle. After the end of the surgery and after the local anaesthesia has worn off, there is usually a discomfort for the first 4-5 hours, which is usually reduced with the use of a mild painkiller (depon). The next day no patient feels any pain at all. Therefore the next day painkillers are not used.
3) Return to work the same day.
Due to the perfectly calculated way of placing the implants, any effect on the oral tissues during the surgery is so small that both the discomfort and any swelling of the area are very small and are not able to keep us away from our work (with the exception of heavy manual work). No specific permission from the working environment is therefore required, which is often a concern for patients.
4) New implant placement techniques
We now avoid grafting procedures and replace them with new techniques. One of the major problems an implantologist has to deal with is the lack of sufficient bone in the patient's jaw for implant placement. In earlier times the only solution was to graft the area with another bone, wait four to five months and then place implants. Now with newer techniques, it is enough to have minimal bone in the area to enable us to proceed with implant treatment. Specifically, the use of another type of drill that moves in reverse incorporates our own bone in the area and the procedure is easier and faster than ever before.
5) Computer-guided implant placement.
Now the implantologist is able to place implants with complete precision and often without even incisions or sutures. This is done using a splint that guides the placement of the implants and is based on the patient's prior CT scan, as in any surgery. Essentially, the doctor's hand is fully guided in placing the implants in the jaw, thus any discomfort and surgery time is dramatically reduced.
6) Cost of a tooth implant
The cost of an implant is the same as placing a bridge in the area. After the simplification of methods in implantology, the cost of implants has been reduced and we are now talking about the same amount whether an implant and crown is placed for tooth loss or a good quality bridge. So with all this in mind, implant restoration seems to have a significant advantage over others for most of the cases of tooth loss.
If we consider the absolute aesthetics that they offer, the perfect functionality in chewing (we return to our childhood situation), the fact that the restorations are stationary and not mobile (like dentures), dental implants seem to be a one-way street. In our practice we are happy to receive patients for a full free check-up and evaluation of their oral condition and information about all the possibilities of restoration.
We conclude the article by showing a picture that shows the improvement in the patient's smile after the placement of implants in his teeth.
