In this video, Mrs. Hadjipanagiotidou explains what dental implants are and where their use is recommended.
What are dental implants
Tooth implants are titanium screws used in case of missing teeth. So if we have lost one or more teeth then we place the tooth implants. Basically, tooth implants restore the root of our lost tooth.
Painless surgery
The placement is done under local anesthesia. A small incision on the gums. The whole procedure usually takes 15 minutes. It is completely painless during the surgery. The same day the patient usually takes a painkiller when the anesthesia wears off. The next day most patients feel no pain at all.
Preparation for tooth implantation
The patient needs to take antibiotics earlier. We have also asked the patient for a specialized X-ray. That is a CT scan of the jaw where we see the quality of the bone, the height and width of the bone. Based on this x-ray we will decide which implants to place.
Titanium
As we said, dental implants are made of titanium. Titanium is a biocompatible material. It is the material that has been used for years in medicine, for example for the placement of foot orthopedics. It becomes one with the bone after about two and a half months. After the implants are placed, we usually wait two and a half months in order to place the teeth on them. This is called post-loading. Immediate loading can also be done if the jawbone allows us to do so. That is, if the jaw is hard enough then the teeth can be placed directly. That is, one or two days after the surgery.
Dental implants
The dental implants is a method that has been used for many years in dentistry. It is an established method. Their technology has improved tremendously in recent years and continues to improve. It is a method by which we have gotten rid of dentures. Which were a mobile restoration method. That is, they go in and out of the teeth. Whereas in the case of implants, the restorations are stationary. Essentially we could say that we are turning back the clock on a patient. That is, the patient has the teeth he had when he was young.
Conservative method
Also to say that it is a conservative method. That is, the tooth that we have lost is the one we place. We do not need to intervene in adjacent teeth as is the case with bridges. And so the rest of our teeth remain intact.
