Implants
The increase in patients' desire for Restoration of their lost teeth with functional, aesthetic and fixed prosthetic restorations, led to the development of the field of implantology. We can no longer conceive of modern dentistry without implantology.
The placement of implants is a daily actIt is the replacement of the root of the missing tooth with a titanium "screw" that is placed in the jawbone.Titanium is a fully biocompatible material and becomes one with the bone after 2-3 months (osseointegration). Single sockets (porcelain crowns) are applied on this titanium "root" if it is a lost tooth or porcelain bridges if the loss is more than one tooth.
In this way the patient enjoys complete restoration of his chewing function and the aesthetics of his smile, without interfering with adjacent teeth (which are not reeled as in the case of simple porcelain bridges). Also in cases of loss of several teeth, where in other times the application of a complete denture would have been necessary, the patient enjoys a fixed restoration supported by a larger number of implants.
Science has developed so much in this field that even in cases where the jawbone is not sufficient, we can use reconstructive techniques (grafts, membranes) to successfully move forward with the implant-based treatment approach.
The implant placement procedure is completely painless. A thorough X-ray examination (CT DENTAL SCAN) is performed before lasts about 15 minutes for each implant and is done under local anaesthesia of the area. It is typical of patients who, after implant treatment, admit that the procedure was much simpler and more painless than they expected.
Advantages & Disadvantages
-The aesthetics and functionality of the lost tooth are restored in the most natural way (the new tooth looks and behaves like a natural tooth).
-We do not interfere at all with the adjacent teeth which, in the case of treatment with a bridge, should be grinded and reduced in volume.
-Protect against the absorption of jaw bone which is inevitable after tooth loss. The implants forcefully load the jaw during the chewing function, which prevents the loss of bone volume.
-Patients with partial or complete dentures can, with the placement of two implants, feel much more stable than before.
-In the long run, implant therapy proves to be more cost-effective than other treatments because it has a longer time perspective of successful operation.
It usually takes longer to recover than other treatments, especially if it is necessary to place grafts in the area.
Frequently asked questions
Implant placement surgeries vary from simple, without the need for the implantologist to use complicated techniques, to highly demanding where knowledge of the latest surgical concepts is imperative in order for the result to be safe and aesthetically and functionally intact.
It is therefore necessary for the implantologist to have completed the necessary postgraduate studies, as well as to continue his/her education with the latest in dental data. It is worth noting that in Greece there is no legislation that prohibits dentists without the corresponding postgraduate studies to place implants.
The quality of the implant itself plays a major role in the longevity of implant treatment. Today we have dozens of implants available from many, many companies worldwide. Of these, few are internationally recognized and clearly more reliable through the scientific research conducted over the last few years in the field of implants.
In Greece in the crisis, the reduction of the cost of each service offered in order to make it more attractive, often leads to the selection of the wrong materials, with a direct impact on its effectiveness.
In our clinic we exclusively use implants of major companies, offering a guarantee of their authenticity.
